The Azerbaijan Union of Judges
welcomes you to Baku!
It is a great honor for Azerbaijan Union of Judges to organize 67th General Assembly of International Association of Judges in Baku, the capital city of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
With its rich history, vibrant culture, and peaceful strategic international relations, Azerbaijan stands as an ideal venue for this most prestigious event of judges around the world.
The Republic of Azerbaijan is the largest country in the South Caucasus region and is located at the crossroads of Asia and Europe on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. It is bounded by Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Türkiye and through the Caspian Sea additionally by Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.
The territory of Azerbaijan is 86.6 thousand square kilometers and the population of Azerbaijan is 10.2 million.
Azerbaijan has diverse climate, with 9 out of 11 world climate zones. The geography covers a diverse collection of landscapes, from wetlands to high mountains, deserts to fertile valleys. Territory bordered to the north by the Greater Caucasus Mountains, and to the south by the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, and opens in the east to the Caspian Sea.
Azerbaijan, which has an ancient history of statehood, became the first democratic parliamentary republic in the Muslim world in 1918. One of the first republic's major reforms was recognizing women’s voting rights.
Unfortunately, in 1920, Soviet Russia invaded, and Azerbaijan became a Soviet republic. This continued until 1991 when the Republic of Azerbaijan regained its independence.
Today, as a bridge between East and West, the Republic of Azerbaijan stands as a secular, modern state where all fundamental human rights are recognized, and their preservation is adhered to.
Considering its multi-religious and multi-ethnic traditions, Azerbaijan has always been a meeting point creating a family atmosphere in peace, tranquility, and mutual respect for people speaking in different languages and representing various religions.
Azerbaijan's economy is dominated by industry, with the oil and gas sectors playing a leading role. The country was one of the world’s leading oil producers at the beginning of the 20th century and continues to be a major supplier of energy to Europe. The oil boom of the 1890s attracted global investments, with the Nobel and Rothschild families playing key roles. The Nobel brothers founded the Nobel Brothers Petroleum Company, which made possible the establishment of the Nobel Prize Foundation. Major energy projects, including oil and gas exploration in the Azerbaijani section of the Caspian Sea are successfully ongoing.
Along with the fast developments in economic sector, Azerbaijan has also played an active role in maintaining international peace and security, having served as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. At the same time, Azerbaijan for several times assumed the chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement - the second-largest international organization after the United Nations. Furthermore, Azerbaijan is a member of the Council of Europe and has been an active participant in European Union programs aimed at promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
Azerbaijani judge was presiding four years in the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice, the intergovernmental body of the Council of Europe responsible for the improvement of the efficiency and functioning of justice in the 46 European states.
